Book Reviews

I've heard it said that you will be in 5 years' time what you are now except for the people you meet and the books you read. There's a vast amount of valuable knowledge in books, and it's available cheaply to anyone running a business who can read. Yet few people in my experience put time aside to do this.

I'm always looking for new books, and usually get through 3 or 4 every month. I've reviewed most of the ones I've read so that others can find out what the book is about and whether it might be worth reading. You can read the reviews I've written below. And of course if you've read anything that you think is well worth a look, I'd love to hear about it - you can send me your comments through the Feedback page.

More Than A Motorcycle by Rich Teerlink and Lee Ozley

This was suggested to me as a good read by a friend who studied for her MBA a while ago. It’s the story of Harley-Davidson and how it turned its fortunes around between the early 80s and the late 90s. ...

Winning! by Sir Clive Woodward

My wife bought me this book for my birthday, and how I wish I’d read it before I met the man himself recently. There are so many questions I’d want to ask him now. This is the story of how Sir Clive took the England rugby team to the top of the pile, w...

Screw It, Let's Do It by Richard Branson

I have to be careful here because if I go on too long my summary will be longer than the book. Yep, this is a short one. Still over 100 pages, but Branson writes in big letters, so you can whip through it. ...

I'll Show Them Who's Boss by Gerry Robinson

You may remember Mr Robinson from the series of the same name that was on BBC TV a while back. The series followed broadly the same lines of the programme from the John Harvey-Jones series of even further back in time: corporate doctor visits small busine...

Selling The Invisible by Harry Beckwith

Anyone out there with a services business? Ever feel like you’re selling invisible stuff? It’s OK for all those businesses that sell real things; their customers...

Maverick by Ricardo Semler

I picked this book up on recommendation from Simon Woodruff (founder of Yo! Sushi) who I heard on the radio. It’s described as the ‘success story...

Shackletons Way by Margot Morrell & Stephanie Capparell

Since I work with business leaders, I picked up Shackleton’s Way because I’m interested in what makes a great leader. It can usually be found in...

How To Be A Complete And Utter Failure In Life, Work and Everything by Steve McDermott

This book is subtitled ’39 ½ steps to lasting underachievement’ and of course it’s really aimed at telling you what you need to do to avoid failure and be successful. It’s just packaged in a more attractive...

Attracting Perfect Customers by Stacey Hall & Jan Brogniez

OK, stay with me on this one, because it’s a little bit off the wall. The sub-title for this book is ‘The Power of Strategic Synchronicity’, so if you want to know more – and if you’re in business then believe me, you should - then read on...

The E-myth Revisited by Michael Gerber

The 'E' of the title refers here to the word 'entrepreneur', and the myth? That anyone who just starts a business is an 'entrepreneur'! Gerber's point is that anyone who gets fed up of doing what they do for someone else and decides to do it for them...
